San Luis Rey fire survivors Martine Bellocq and Grey Tsunami teamed up to give the trainer her first winner since 2017 on Feb. 9, when the 5-year-old Quarter Horse mare won the second race at Los Alamitos.

“I was screaming, 'God, you took my leg, but give me a winner today,' ” Bellocq told The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Burned over 60 percent of her body when rescuing horses from the fire, Bellocq was in a coma for months. She has undergone numerous surgeries, lost part of her left leg, and has more upcoming surgeries for her eyes, mouth and neck.

On the night of Grey Tsunami's race, her husband Pierre Bellocq was at Los Alamitos while Martine stayed home. She watched the race on television, and tried to FaceTime her husband to celebrate. Pierre was overwhelmed, he said, laughing, and couldn't figure out how to get to the winner's circle.

“It felt like winning the (Kentucky) Derby,” Pierre said. “It was a long time coming.”
