Keeneland's backstretch community has been treated to the regular presence of a family of red foxes over the past two months, reports the Lexington Herald-Leader. A mother, father and approximately four “kits” have been spotted in a number of places around the racecourse, including traipsing across the track itself.
Trainer Rusty Arnold has a cell phone photograph of a fox sitting outside his barn, and trainer John Burke reports having seen the mother, a “vixen,” scavenging the remains of an empty box of chicken.
None of the horses seem to have an issue with the foxes' presence, according to the trainers, and pay the creatures no mind when they gallop by during their morning exercise.
