At 43 years of age, Vanessa Romberg is finally following the dream she had imagined since childhood: she is an apprentice jockey at Turf Paradise. According to the Arizona Republic, the French-born Romberg retired from her successful career as an investment banker at age 39 to begin galloping racehorses at a track in Mexico City. After two years exercising the horses, she rode her first race, and won. She and her husband, jockey Giorgio Moreno, moved to Arizona in 2016.
“This is my dream,” Romberg said. “I love this place. People are so nice in the U.S.”
Romberg got her first win in the United States on Dec. 12, also the first career win for trainer Lauren Barat, aboard Plus Perfect at Turf Paradise. So far, that is her lone win from 35 starts, but she does have a second and four third-place finishes as well.
