Frankie Dettori, 48, has been a jockey 32 years and has naturally begun to think about retirement. But the multiple classic-winning rider told The Racing Post this week there's still one more bucket list item he's hoping to accomplish before he hangs up his tack for good: a ride against his son, Rocco.
Rocco Dettori is 14 years old and has already built a resume on the children's pony racing scene. The elder Dettori admitted he was not initially thrilled to hear about Rocco's ambition to follow in his father's footsteps, given the intense pressures and dangers that come with being a professional jockey. If he's determined to race ride anyway though, Frankie hopes to ride with him.
If he becomes a jockey, Rocco will be the third generation to do so. Frankie raced against his father, Gianfranco, before his retirement.
“I rode with my dad and it was an amazing experience and I'm very proud that I did it,” he told the Post. “If [Rocco] wants to do it it's an amazing ambition of mine to be able to ride with him. He can tell his children that we did it.”
