Trevor Denman, the iconic race announcer at Santa Anita Park for over 30 years, will still call the races at Del Mar in 2016, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. This follows the unexpected news of the 63-year-old's retirement from Santa Anita on Friday.
Del Mar CEO Joe Harper said, “I can tell you I've been around racetracks since the end of World War II and Trevor is the best ever.” Denman will call races at the seaside oval for both the summer and fall meets, as their shortened durations will fit his new “retirement” schedule. Harper continued, Denman “can't be replaced easily.”
Santa Anita announced a “world-wide search to find the next voice of The Great Race Place for the next generation,” because the organization is “not going to replace an icon of three decades in less than three weeks.”
