Delacour Stable representatives have established an aid fund for exercise rider Erasmo Tranquilino, who was injured in an accident on the backstretch over the weekend. It's still not clear exactly what happened, but Delacour Stable's Leigh Delacour says he may have fallen off the back of a golf cart and hit his head. Tranquilino has experienced brain bleeding and cranial swelling following a head injury and is currently in a medically-induced coma.
“He's been part of our team, which is essentially our family … On Friday, he was with myself and my husband playing with my infant son at the races, and an hour later we got a call from security that they had sent him to the hospital,” said Delacour, who runs Delacour Stables with husband Arnaud.
Delacour reports that Tranquilino has been opening his eyes when eased out of the coma for vitals checks, but “it's a very long way from Erasmo breezing Lentenor”.
“We always make a joke–his last name is Tranquilino, and that kind of describes the guy. He's very difficult to rattle, and he rides horses that are particularly spunky horses and gets them to settle well. As both my husband and myself ride, we're very particular about riders, and he is excellent,” said Delacour.
Delacour is based at Fair Hill Training Center in the spring, summer, and fall, and is currently stabled at Tampa Bay Downs for the winter season. The barn has a group of 20 riders who travel with the operation and ride for it exclusively.
The tax-deductible fund is run through the Tampa Bay Chaplaincy office. Donations earmarked for the Erasmo Tranquilino Fund can be mailed to Tampa Bay Downs, Attn Chaplaincy Office, 11225 Race Track Road, Tampa, FL 33626. Donors should include their return address to receive a letter of tax deduction at the end of the year.
