California turf writer Art Wilson notes that with two weeks left in the Del Mar meet, the race for the jockey title may be one of the most thrilling ever:

“Rafael Bejarano, Joe Talamo and defending champion Joel Rosario lead the way with 24 victories apiece and Garrett Gomez is two back with 15 racing days remaining.”

“I don't remember a time (this late) in the meeting where you have four guys who could win the title,” Del Mar senior media coordinator Dan Smith said. “I don't recall a race this close, and this is my 48th year at Del Mar.”

Wilson continues:  “There's no doubt in my mind that with riders like the aforementioned quartet, plus Patrick Valenzuela, Tyler Baze, Victor Espinoza, Martin Pedroza, Martin Garcia, David Flores, Mike Smith, Alonso Quinonez and Chantal Sutherland, this is the deepest jockey colony in the country.”
