Irish billionaire John Magnier, owner of Thoroughbred racing's Coolmore Stud, brought the hammer down at a different kind of auction Monday, selling a nude portrait by artist Amedeo Modigliani for $157.2 million, the fourth-highest price for a work of art at auction.
Magnier had purchased the 1917 oil painting “Nu couché (sur le côté gauche)” for about $26 million in 2003.
Sotheby's noted that as the sale was still live, the painting achieved the highest price ever at the 274-year-old auction house.
