Trainer Chris Richard won two races Friday to set a record for most victories at a thoroughbred meet at Prairie Meadows.
Richard won with a pair of Iowa-breds, sending out Tiger Lake to win the fourth race and Midnight Moment to win the 10th. That gave him 65 wins in 190 starts this year. Dick Clark set the previous mark in 2006 by winning 64 races in 259 starts.
“I just feel privileged to train for (owner) Maggi Moss and everything she has done for me, and River Ridge Ranch,” said Richard, who graduated with a master's degree in animal nutrition from Texas A&M and has been training since 1998. “I've just had some very good horses to work with this year. I thought I had a really good chance to have an outstanding meet, and we've exceeded our expectations.”
Richard is winning at a 34.2 percent rate, the third-highest percentage ever at Prairie Meadows for any trainer with 10 or more wins. The 66-day thoroughbred concludes Saturday with 10 races starting at 6:30 p.m.
