Jockey Chantal Sutherland is looking to make a return to race-riding next month, according to Daily Racing Form. Though she has been on horses in the morning in recent weeks, she last rode in a race in July 2014.
Sutherland said she has been considering a return to racing for six months, “I've missed it so much,” she said. Her targeted return date is Santa Anita Park's opening day, Dec. 26, but she indicated she may ride a few races at Los Alamitos to get back in shape. She returned to the track in September, working horses for Bob Baffert assistant Mike Marlow at Los Alamitos.
This will mark Sutherland's second return to the races; the first break came between October 2012 through June 2013. She is best known for becoming the first female rider to win the Santa Anita Handicap, which she took with Game On Dude in 2011.
Sutherland has done endorsement work for the Bet America advance deposit wagering company and acquired a real estate license. In 2012, she married Southern California meat wholesaler Dan Kruse, who supports her return to the saddle, according to the Form.
