With four Keeneland stakes victories last week, Javier Castellano was named Jockeys' Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week title for April 1-7, 2019. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by FoundationDetox.com, America's #1 Equine Toxin Remover.
Castellano led all North American jockeys by number of wins, total and stakes earnings, and number of stakes victories thanks to his performance at Keeneland during opening weekend of the spring meet.
Castellano began with a win in the $100,000 Palisades Turf Sprint Stakes on opening day with Bulletin ($4.00). He returned on Friday to win the $150,000 Kentucky Utilities Transylvania Stakes (G3) with Avie's Flatter ($10.00).
Castellano won four races on Saturday, including the featured race and Kentucky Derby prep, the $1,000,000 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes with Vekoma ($4.80). He also won the $300,000 Madison Stakes (G1) with Spiced Perfection ($11.00) and was third in the $500,000 Central Bank Ashland Stakes (G1) with Jaywalk.
In his 17 starts last week, Castellano won nine races for a win rate of 53%; he finished in the money on 76% of his mounts. He has won 50 of his 238 starts this year and is 5,073 for 27,800 lifetime.
Castellano was the leading jockey by stakes earnings, with $986,666 earned last week, as well as the leading jockey for total money earned, adding $1,267,372 to his 2019 total of $7,942,894. In his career to date, he has earned over $325 million.
The four-time Eclipse Award winner for Outstanding Jockey was inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame in 2017. Last fall, he reached a career milestone, becoming the 34th jockey to reach the 5,000-win mark.
