Bredar: ‘Where’s the love for apprentice jockeys?’

There have been a few articles in racing publications recently in which the writers have stated that the Outstanding Apprentice Jockey category of the Eclipse Awards should be eliminated.

Richard Migliore, a past recipient of the honor, wrote a column in the Daily Racing Form in defense of keeping the category. In her latest blog entry for, Caton Bredar also feels that the champion apprentice jockey should still be honored at the end of the year.

“While the awards themselves may mean very little to the voter, they mean a lot to the recipients and, down the line, offer a historical perspective to the time and sport” Bredar writes. “As for the quality of the candidates, who's to say this group of apprentice riders is any worse—or better—than any other group…?”
