After winning his 4,000th career race last week, Rafael Bejarano was chosen as the Jockeys' Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for June 10-16, 2019. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Rafael Bejarano started Saturday at Santa Anita with 3,998 lifetime wins and six mounts on the card. He won his first race of the day, and immediately followed with another to notch his 4,000th career victory.
The milestone win came in a claiming race on Portal Creek ($5.20), a 3-year-old filly trained by Bob Hess, Jr. the pair gained an early lead and extended it to a nearly 4-length victory in the $46,000 dirt sprint.
Bejarano made a third trip to the winner's circle on Saturday afternoon, this time in the feature race of the card, the $100,000 Thor's Echo Stakes. He and post-time favorite Desert Law ($5.40) cruised home to win the 6-furlong sprint by over six lengths.
The career milestone win was one of four in 13 starts for Bejarano, who finished in the money on 46% of his mounts for the week. He was in the top 20 jockeys for earnings last week with his weekly total of $195,442.
Bejarano now has 4,002 wins in 19,641 career starts and has exactly 50 wins and 50 seconds in his 301 mounts of 2019. His year-to-date earnings total $3,043,195 and he has career earnings of over $200 million.
In the current Santa Anita meet, Bejarano is the third leading jockey by wins with 47, behind Flavien Prat and Joel Rosario, and he is fourth by earnings in the meet with $2,809,974. A return to Turfway Park in March netted him three stakes wins and Jockey of the Week honors, and he has picked up a pair of graded stakes wins in the San Francisco Mile (G3) with Blitzkrieg and the Tokyo City Cup (G3) with Campaign at Santa Anita.
