Baffert on Bayern’s Derby Potential: ‘I Hope He Is That Good’

Bayern's 15-length Allowance victory at Santa Anita turned a lot of heads last Thursday, including that of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.

In an interview with Jennifer Wirth for the Saturday Post, the veteran conditioner said he was hoping the 3-year-old colt would show some talent stretching out to the mile distance, but “I was surprised by how effortlessly he did it.”

As the trainer of three Kentucky Derby winners, Baffert spoke cautiously about the colt's chances in the Run for the Roses, pointing out that the son of Offlee Wild has had a late start with only two outs. He does plan to keep him in California, possibly directed toward the Santa Anita Derby.

When asked about the resemblances to past Derby winner Big Brown, Baffert admitted, “I hope he is that good.”

    I am confused. Why would anyone ask Baffert about Bayern’s resemblance to Big Brown? Am I missing something here?
