Australian Champion jockey Hugh Bowman won his first international Group 1 race on Sunday in the Hong Kong Derby, according to racing.com. He rode the John Moore-trained Werther to a head victory over stablemate Victory Magic. Bowman and Werther were able to defeat the favored Sun Jewellery, who had beaten them in both the Hong Kong Classic Mile and the Hong Kong Classic Cup leading up to the Derby.
“I came here knowing I had a great chance to win the Derby but I knew I had an even better one when I saw Werther in the paddock,” Bowman told the South China Morning Post. I was really impressed with how he presented before the race. He'd looked well the last couple of times I rode him but he just seemed brighter today, there was just a gloss to him that hadn't been there before.
“Werther deserved that win,” the jockey continued. “I thought he was unlucky in the Classic Mile, slightly disappointing but with an excuse in the Classic Cup when he was a touch keen but he showed what he could do today.”
