According to the Daily Racing Form, stewards have disqualified Proud Azteca from an Oct. 30 allowance win due to the horse's ineligibility for the race conditions. Hesinfront, ridden by Robby Albarado, was then placed first in the new order of finish, giving the rider a milestone 1,000th win at Churchill Downs.
Albarado had gone into this weekend with 999 victories, and went winless on Saturday with six mounts. He is just the third rider to reach 1,000 wins at the track, after Pat Day and Calvin Borel. His 1,000 win at Churchill Downs will be publicly acknowledged after his next winning ride.
Trainer Mike Maker believed that Proud Azteca, a winner of a statebred stakes race, was still eligible to the race restricted to “3-year-olds which have never won two races other than maiden, claiming, starter, or statebred allowance or which have never won three races.” However, stewards ruled that only statebred allowances, not stakes, were allowed to be exempted. Maker will not receive any additional punishment for the incident.
