Next shares (outside) gets up by a nose in the San Gabriel Stakes

Following his narrow victory in Saturday's Grade 2 San Gabriel Stakes, Next Shares will point for the inaugural Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational later this month.

Immediately after the San Gabriel, part owner Michael Iavarone said the 6-year-old Archarcharch colt would be entered in the new $7 million race Jan. 26 at Gulfstream Park.

Ridden by Geovanni Franco and trained by Richard Baltas, Next Shares has won three of his last four starts, although he finished 13th in the Breeders' Cup Mile during that stretch. The winner of last year's Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes at Keeneland has won six of 22 starts with career earnings close to $1.2 million.

The gelding won the San Gabriel at 1 1/8 miles on the Santa Anita turf by nose over Cleopatra's Strike. The Pegasus World Cup Turf will be contested at 1 3/16 miles and offers a winner's purse of $3 million.
