Oklahoma Derby winner Owendale will make his next start in the Breeders' Cup Classic, trainer Brad Cox told drf.com. The 3-year-old son of Into Mischief has won four of his seven starts this season, including the G3 Lexington and G3 Ohio Derby, and also finished third in the G1 Preakness Stakes.
“He breezed Saturday morning, his first work after the Oklahoma Derby,” Cox said, referencing a half-mile work in :49.00 at his Churchill Downs base. “He went great. We're very pleased with him.”
Owendale's regular rider, Florent Geroux, was injured during a morning training incident on Sunday at Keeneland. The jockey broke his sternum, and it is currently uncertain whether he will be able to return to riding in time for the Breeders' Cup. Cox said he would wait for Geroux to make a decision before pursuing a new rider for the colt.
