Charles Fipke's homebred Seeking the Soul finished seventh in Saturday's $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar, a disappointing effort from the post-time favorite. Trainer Dallas Stewart explained that the 6-year-old son of Perfect Soul suffered a bout of the “thumps,” an electrolyte imbalance, according to Horse Racing Nation.
“Who knows when it might have happened?” Stewart said. “It might have happened in the post parade or something. He just never got comfortable. It happens from time to time.”
A winner of the G2 Stephen Foster earlier this year, Seeking the Soul already owns a berth to the Breeders' Cup Classic. Stewart had not planned to race the horse again after the Pacific Classic, but that plan has changed. Seeking the Soul is now being pointed to the G3 Lukas Classic on Sept. 28 at Churchill Downs as a final prep race for the Classic.
