Last year's Breeders' Cup Turf runner-up Magical had to settle for second again Wednesday as she couldn't get by Crystal Ocean in deep stretch of the Group 1 Prince of Wales's Stakes, a 'Win and You're In' for the 2019 edition of the Turf.
The victory by Crystal Ocean, ridden by Frankie Dettori and trained by Sir Michael Stoute, gave the jockey his 62nd Royal Ascot win and the all-time winningest Royal Ascot trainer his 80th.
Under Dettori, Crystal Ocean stalked frontrunner Hunting Horn in the 1 1/4-mile race then surged to the front heading into the stretch. The horse weaved a bit late as Magical bore down on him, but he held steady enough to hit the line first. Waldgeist finished third.
It was the eighth win in 15 starts for Crystal Ocean, a son of Sea The Stars bred in Great Britain and owned by Sir Evelyn De Rothschild. The 5-year-old came into the Prince of Wales's Stakes with wins in both his 2019 starts.
Dettori collected his 61st Royal Ascot victory earlier on the card with a win the Queen Mary Stakes aboard Raffle Prize.
