For the second consecutive year, Whitney Stakes winner Diversify will skip the Breeders' Cup Classic, owner Ralph Evans tells the Daily Racing Form.
Evans said several things went into the decision, including the fact that trainer Rick Violette has been in the hospital in recent weeks with an illness.
In his last race, Diversify finished fifth in Jockey Club Gold Cup, a race he won last year. After that victory in 2017, Diversify was pointed for the Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs instead of the Breeders' Cup Classic. He finished fourth.
“The fact Rick was not going to make it back in time to train him was probably the primary reason,” Evans told DRF. “Also, he had a tough race in the Gold Cup and was not 100 percent. Churchill was not kind to the horse the last time.”
Diversify will likely be pointed toward the Pegagus World Cup in January at Gulfstream Park.
