Winchell Thoroughbreds and Three Chimneys Farm's Gun Runner continues to impress trainer Steve Asmussen in his morning workouts, reports drf.com. The 4-year-old son of Candy Ride breezed five furlongs in 1:01 over Saratoga's Oklahoma Training Track on Sunday, going in company with stablemate and Kentucky Derby runner-up Lookin at Lee.
“He's a very impressive horse who continues to do well,” Asmussen said. “He's trained phenomenal all year, he really has. I'm very excited about the Whitney here. It should be a very competitive race against some excellent horses on a great stage. It's a great opportunity for him.”
Gun Runner's target is the G1 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 5, which his trainer hopes to add to the colt's already impressive resume. The Whitney is a “Win and You're In” contest for the Breeders' Cup Classic this November at Del Mar.
Finishing a good second to superstar Arrogate in the March Dubai World Cup, Gun Runner returned to win Churchill Downs' Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap in his most recent start. Overall, he has won eight of his 15 starts for earnings of more than $4.6 million.
