Drefong (Gio Ponti) and jockey Mike Smith win the King's Bishop (Gr I) at Saratoga Racecourse 8/27/16. Trainer: Bob Baffert. Owner: Charles Chu

Charles Chu's sophomore colt Drefong recorded a bullet workout at Santa Anita Monday morning, his penultimate move before contesting the Breeders' Cup Sprint. The Bob Baffert trainee broke off at the five-furlong marker, moving to the wire in :58.72 in company. Rider Martin Garcia urged him out another furlong to earn an official six-furlong clocking of 1:11.50, galloping out seven furlongs in 1:24.51.

“My first 59 of the meet,” Baffert told the Daily Racing Form. “I don't always work him in blinkers, but I do when I want to get serious, and this was a serious work. I wanted to give him something really stiff today and then come back and blow him out a little next week. I worked him six furlongs out of the gate last week, and he got a little tired, but that was over a much more demanding track than we had today.”

Other Breeders' Cup workers Monday morning included:

  • Enchanting Lady (Filly and Mare Sprint) worked six furlongs in 1:13.07 for Baffert.
  • By The Moon (Filly and Mare Sprint) worked five furlongs in 1:00.80 for Michelle Nevin.
  • Lookin at Lee (Juvenile) breezed five furlongs in :59.90 for trainer Steve Asmussen.
  • Avenge (Filly and Mare Turf) worked six furlongs in 1:12.06 on the dirt for Richard Mandella.
