Beach Patrol was much the best in the G1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic

Trainer Chad Brown sent his contingent of 11 probable Breeders' Cup starters out for their penultimate works Saturday morning at Belmont Park, highlighted by Longines Turf entrants Beach Patrol and Fanciful Angel. According to, the 1-2 finishers in both the Arlington Million and Joe Hirsch Turf breezed five furlongs in company on the turf course, stopping the clock in 1:02.59.

Though Beach Patrol has defeated his stablemate in their last two meetings, Brown has been particularly impressed with Fanciful Angel of late.

“I see a horse that every week is getting bigger, stronger,” said the trainer. “He has a little bit of a high head carriage. He tugs a lot through the lane. He's not unmanageable. In fact, I think he's improving. He was perched outside of Beach Patrol, and he actually galloped out ahead of him a little bit. Not by design, but that's how much run the horse had left in him once we let him have his head a touch on the gallop-out.”

Brown's other probable starters working on Saturday were:

  • Filly & Mare Turf: Lady Eli (five furlongs in company in 1:00.14), Grand Jete (half mile in company in :48.97), and Dacita (half mile in company in :50.20)
  • Filly & Mare Sprint: Carina Mia (half mile in :48.84), Paulassilverlining (five furlongs in company in 1:01.19)
  • Juvenile Fillies Turf: Significant Form (five furlongs in company in :59.64)
  • Juvenile Turf: Voting Control (half mile in company in :50.36)
  • Juvenile: Good Magic (half-mile in company in :50.91)
  • Dirt Mile or Sprint: Practical Joke (five furlongs in company in 1:02.06)

The schedule calls for Brown's other two Belmont-based Breeders' Cup probables, Annals of Time (Mile) and Separationofpowers (Juvenile Fillies) to breeze on Sunday. The entire group will work again next Saturday before flying out to Del Mar on Sunday.

Additionally, Brown has Jessamine Stakes winner Rushing Fall based at Keeneland prior to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.
