The TVG Breeders' Cup Mile is shaping up as one of the deepest and most competitive renewals in recent memory, as, depending on the participation of Bricks and Mortar, the race would lack a prior standout like Goldikova (IRE) or Wise Dan, but instead figures to have a full field of 14 who are all long on credentials and all have winning chances.
Favoritism could go any number of different ways but Michael Dubb, Head of Plains Partners, Robert LaPenta, and Bethlehem Stable's UNI (GB) may be the one to beat the trainer Chad Brown. The 5-year-old daughter of More Than Ready earned an automatic starting berth into the Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf when she won Keeneland's Oct. 5 “Win and You're In” First Lady (G1) but her 6-for-7 record at a mile has her connections expected to supplement her to the Mile. Uni is 9-for-17 lifetime, including Del Mar's Matriarch (G1) last December.
A trio of American “Win and You're In” Challenge race winners will have a major say, as Agave Racing Stable and ERJ Stable's BOWIES HERO, a 5-year-old son of 2005 Mile winner Artie Schiller, won the Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) Oct. 5 for trainer Phil D'Amato, while Sam-Son Farm's EL TORMENTA, a 4-year-old son of Stormy Atlantic, won the Ricoh Woodbine Mile (G1) Sept. 14 for trainer Gail Cox, and Gary Barber and Southern Equine Stable's GOT STORMY, a 4-year-old daughter of Get Stormy, won Saratoga's Fourstardave (G1) in August for trainer Mark Casse.
The Europeans could send two “Win and You're In” Challenge winners in Geoff and Sandra Turnbull's LORD GLITTERS (FR), a 6-year-old son of Whipper who won Royal Ascot's Queen Anne (G1) in June for trainer David O'Meara, while R Ng's ROMANISED (IRE), a 4-year-old son of Holy Roman Emperor (IRE) won Deauville's Jacques le Marois (G1) in August for trainer Ken Condon. Saturday's $1.40 million QUIPCO Queen Elizabeth II (G1) at Ascot could also impact any prospective European participation.
The Americans could also see CATHOLIC BOY, CARRIBOU CLUB, CATAPULT, HIGHER POWER, LUCULLAN and RESTRAINEDVENGENCE enter for the TVG Breeders' Cup Mile, while Europeans CIRCUS MAXIMUS (IRE), IRIDESSA (IRE), LINE OF DUTY (IRE), MUSTASHRY (GB), SPACE TRAVELLER, SUEDOIS (FR), and TRUE VALOUR (IRE) are also eying the race.
