After telling Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith he would not be riding McKinzie in the Breeders' Cup Classic, trainer Bob Baffert has handed the reins to Joel Rosario, the Daily Racing Form reported Wednesday.
Smith had ridden McKinzie in each of his 13 starts to date. The Street Sense colt has won seven and finished second twice, producing earnings of nearly $2.3 million. Despite a loss in his most recent race, the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes, McKinzie retained the top spot in the most recent Breeders' Cup Classic Rankings.
Rosario has been aboard another Breeders' Cup Classic contender, Yoshida, trained by Bill Mott, so Mott will be looking for someone to replace Rosario for the race Nov. 2 at Santa Anita.
