Trained by Bob Baffert, the Grade 1 winner Dream Tree was preparing to make the journey to Churchill Downs with the rest of her stablemates; she was set to contest the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. The 3-year-old blew through a half-mile work at Santa Anita on Friday in :46.80, according to drf.com, but came out of the breeze with an entrapped epiglottis that requires surgery.
Instead of heading to auction after the Breeders' Cup, Dream Tree will receive surgery and remain in training for a 4-year-old season, Baffert said.
Baffert's other Filly & Mare Sprint entrant, Marley's Freedom, will now pick up the services of Hall of Fame rider Mike Smith, originally scheduled to pilot Dream Tree. Additionally, Baffert announced that Smith will have the mount on McKinzie in the Classic, while his other entrant West Coast will pick up jockey John Velazquez.
