Arrogate, the record-setting victor of the Travers Stakes, recorded a seven-furlong breeze Tuesday morning at Santa Anita in preparation for the Breeders' Cup Classic on Nov. 5, reports the Daily Racing Form. The sophomore son of Unbridled's Song began the workout in unison with Mor Spirit, but allowed his workmate to gain nearly a five-length advantage on him near the head of the lane. Arrogate, under the guidance of Rafael Bejarano, shot down the lane to finish on even terms with Mor Spirit, recording a final time of 1:24 2/5.
“I want him to get something strong out of it,” trainer Bob Baffert said. “I work him in company because if he goes by himself he doesn't get enough out of it. He's a big, long-jumping thing, isn't he? He needs a full mile and a quarter.”
The 1 1/4-mile distance is that of the Travers, and the same that Arrogate will negotiate in the Classic. Mike Smith has the mount in the Breeders' Cup, where the pair will take on California Chrome, undefeated in 2016, as well as a field likely to include Frosted, Melatonin, Hoppertunity, Effinex, Nyquist, and Shaman Ghost, among others.
