Arrogate ‘Just Cruising’ In Tuesday Breeze For Classic

Arrogate works at Santa Anita on Oct. 10

Arrogate stepped onto the track at Santa Anita on Tuesday morning and recorded a bullet breeze toward the Breeders' Cup Classic. In company again with Bob Baffert-trained stablemate Uninvited, the 4-year-old son of Unbridled's Song began well behind his workmate under Rafael Bejarano. According to drf.com Arrogate was credited with an official five-furlong time of 1:00.20, working from the half-mile pole to a furlong past the wire, then galloping out in 1:13.20.

“He went nice and easy, just cruising around there,” Baffert said. “The track is deep this morning. He went really nice, was happy coming off the track.”

Three works remain before Arrogate tackle the challenge of the Classic at Del Mar. Several of those threats come from within Baffert's barn, including current leading 3-year-old West Coast. Since Hall of Famer Mike Smith is the regular rider for both horses, Javier Castellano has picked up the mount on West Coast while Smith chose to stick with Arrogate.

Baffert's other two Classic probables, Collected and Mubtaahij, would be piloted by Martin Garcia and Drayden Van Dyke, respectively.

    That a boy Arrogate :)))))))))

    • Erin Casseday

I think you and I are a minority on this thread! LOL I thought it was a good work. Everything that he did, he did easily and within himself, he was not asked to do much more. He is corning better (no crooked head) and his lead change was smooth and fluid.

      • McGov

I like what I see too. I think if he starts again, he wins. It’s good that there are a few weeks before the BC so that Baffert can sharpen the pencil a bit more….but I see a horse that is improving every week.
IMO one of the most interesting parts of horse racing is predicting the future and all the factors that must be considered…..and all the opinions of those factors…..often, the race itself is far less interesting ;)
Fingers crossed that this incredible horse continues to prepare for a peak effort on BC day.

  • Bobby blue

Couldn’t even get by the bad work mate, not the same horse.

    • Tango F

poor Uninvited … why did George ever agree to buy a Storm Cat mare and breed to Misremembered TWICE?

      • GoodnessMe

Because he owns part of Misremembered.

        • Tango F

It was rhetorical, Babs … ;-)

        • Tango F

Funny how my response disappeared, huh?
The question was rhetorical and meant to have a tinge of sarcasm. I feel badly for any horse that struggles and is used as a “victim” in morning works.

      • Tango F

        rhetorical

      • David Juffet

        Clueless I guess.

  • Ruffian31

I don’t know about anyone else, but that work wasn’t impressive at all. He was basically lumbaring around the track without much enthusiasm. He couldn’t even get past his workmate, who was getting his feet down faster. He actually looks like he is regressing and I don’t care about the time. If you compare this work to the one he had back in January before the Pegasus, this horse is just not the same at all. He’s going to have his work cut out for him in the Classic.

    • Shyanne Rasmussen

The work inspires even less hope when one remembers that the Breeders Cup is at Del Mar this year: a track and surface that Arrogate seems to hate.

      • Ruffian31

        Very True.

    • David Juffet

      Late Scratch?

  • Shasta Sam

Compare that work to Gun Runner’s the other day. Not even close. My guess….Arrogate will not run in the Classic. He is not the same horse. He looks like he’s lost a little weight. More downside than upside at this point of his career. If they ran the race today, Gun Runner would be the favorite.

    • Beau Geste

Not sure about the rest, but I agree that Gun Runner will at least open as the favorite.

      • GoodnessMe

And the truth is the favorite should be the horse who won a Gr. 1 at the distance over the track;-)

        • Beau Geste

If I could whisper this to you, I would; let’s just keep Collected between us, okay?

          • Tango F

You can whisper, but you know all of Bob’s horses ( except Mub – THAT is the one ) will be a stupid odds …

          • Beau Geste

I agree that if there is a hot early pace the race could set up very nicely for Mubtaahij.

          • David Juffet

Hot pace will help Gunnevera too. Well managed horse will outrun his odds.

    • Meydan Rocks

We the fans don’t want a guess. Is he going to run or not?
What we also find fascinating is that should Gun Runner win, it will be his first time ever at this distance. Doing so at this venue would make it an incredible way to get of the schnide. If he loses he will be 0 for 4 at this distance.
And then there are the looming dark horses like Gunnervera, West Coast and Collected.
I’m pretty sure they won’t be standing still to award Gun Runner the Cup.
Great stuff leading up to the big race!

    • Tango F

I don’t think Arrogate will run

      • Gerard

Agreed…..if anything, they should run him in the Pegasus (over a track we know he likes and for more money) then send him off to stud….but that’s just IMHO

        • Tango F

I don’t think they want to risk his not winning that one, either

    • GoodnessMe

Agree, it’s just not there from watching that work. Looked good early in that work but doesn’t make up the found late anymore. Interesting part is Mike Smith chose him and trust me, he won’t be without a mount on a Baffert horse in the race:-) Hello, Collected! Poor Rafael Bejarano gets screwed again.

    • David Juffet

He’ll be the favorite BC Day to.

  • Beau Geste

Bob Baffert has forgotten more than I will ever know about training racehorses so I’m not about to comment or criticize. I will agree with another poster here though that Arrogate does appear different. In the past, he looked like your textbook “push button” horse. Now he appears to have to work at it. He might still win the Breeders Cup Classic, but now it would almost be a surprise.

    • Olebobbowers

One important factor you overlooked about baffart is he lies frequently to try and cover his a$$. Never rely on his comments being anywhere true.

  • discopartner

He looks pretty fast with that low daisy cutter stride that lets him cover so much ground with less effort. But is he actually going fast or is it just visually impressive?

  • MR.DR.

OK……I WILL POST WHAT AND WHY ARROGATE RAN BAD……….in the next coming days………..i will PROVE IT………..alot of you do NOT understand that i make a living at this game……so much so, i must hide my identity………….

To be a pro, you must know HORSES! How they act, what they do, and bad signs that something is wrong………

I do NOT like giving away secrets, or knowledge …….for free………..but i will give the PROOF, for all to see……………why?…………..because you people have LOST YOUR MINDS!………….It’s like you have never seen a horse go off form before!

People are blaming all this stuff, for why arrogate ran bad……….the usual….”didn’t like the track…”…..or “he lost the will”……blah blah……..

ARROGATE is back!……..and my proof will show you………….stay tuned!

  • David Juffet

He’s been cruising in his last few races too. Over the top, done.
