Capturing his fourth consecutive Hong Kong Horse of the Year title, trainer John Moore gracefully accepted the award on behalf of his trainee Werther, reports the South China Morning Post. The 4-year-old captured the 2016 Derby and QEII Cup, bringing home over HK$29 million (US$3.7 million) in earnings for the season.
“Werther came to me as an ugly duckling but what a star he has turned out to be and tonight I expected him to win this award – top horses can come from anywhere,” Moore said.
Other major award winners included Sun Jewellery, named Champion Miler, and Peniaphobia, the season's Champion Sprinter.
