Vertigineux, Broodmare of the Year and the dam of Horse of the Year Zenyatta, died in 2014 after a severe bout of colic.
Coolmore Stud reported the news via its Facebook page on Tuesday. The farm issued the following statement:
Coolmore regrets to confirm that Vertigineux, dam of superstar Zenyatta has indeed passed away.
The daughter of Kris S. suffered an acute colic last year and was sent straight to the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute where everything was done to save her, but unfortunately this was not possible.
Vertigineux was covered by Tapit in 2013 when she failed to go in foal. Her final offspring is her unnamed two-year-old full-brother to Zenyatta.
In addition to the mighty Zenyatta, Vertigineaux was also the dam of multiple Grade 1 winner Balance (by Thunder Gulch), winner of the Santa Anita Oaks and Santa Margarita; and listed winner Where's Bailey, winner of the Remington Park Oaks.
