Spirit of Shanghai provided her sire, 2012 champion juvenile male Shanghai Bobby, with his first winner in his first crop to race on June 18.
Trained by John Brocklebank, Spirit of Shangai (Shanghai Bobby x Yamato Samashii, by Tiznow) broke a step slowly in the maiden claiming race under jockey Edwin Maldonado, but she soon took command and pulled away to win by a length. Final time for the five-furlong dash was :59.13 seconds over Santa Anita's main track.
Brockleback purchased Spirit of Shanghai for $72,000 at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall yearling sale. She is one of four winners produced from Yamato Damashii.
Shanghai Bobby was undefeated in five starts at age two, which included victories in the G1 Champagne Stakes and G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile. He stands at Ashford Stud for a fee of $25,000.
