Multiple G1 Winner Moonlight Cloud Retired, Booked to Galileo

George Strawbridge's six-time Group 1 winner Moonlight Cloud has been retired, according to a report in the Racing Post. The daughter of Invincible Spirit will be bred to Galileo this season.

Trainer Freddy Head told the Post that Strawbridge took his time in making the decision, but in the end, the decision was easy. “He (Strawbridge) always favored sending her to stud at this stage and I think he was a little worried that, as she was already six, she might not be able to perform quite so brilliantly in the future,” Head said of the decision to retire her.

The 6-year-old Moonlight Cloud won three consecutive editions of the Prix Maurice de Gheest (Fr-I), and came within a short head of defeating Black Caviar in the Diamond Jubilee (Eng-I) at Royal Ascot.

Just pull up the Oct 2013 Qatar Prix de la Foret (Group 1) race on youtube and see how absolutely lethal her turn of foot is when asked.

It’s a shame that same kick wasn’t evident in 2012 with the Breeders’ Cup. Augustin Stables had a great race horse with her and hope the Galileo offspring with be just as impressive.
