Did you know 12 of the past 20 Kentucky Derby winners have created Moneigh® paintings? A Moneigh® is an original, abstract, watercolor painting made by equines using the muzzle, whiskers, tail, hoof, or paintbrush held in the artist' teeth. The name is trademarked by ReRun and derived from the name of a famous artist and the sound a horse makes. Over 1,300 paintings have been completed since the project began in 2001. ReRun is a non- profit program that assists Thoroughbreds in finding second careers after racing.
An auction of paintings created by 9 winners of Triple Crown races will be held on eBay® June 2-9, 2014. Artists include: Animal Kingdom, Funny Cide, Giacomo, Mine That Bird, Orb, Shackleford, Street Sense, Super Saver, and Union Rags.
“We are so grateful to the owners, trainers, and farms to allow us to have the opportunity to meet and work with these stars of the turf”, says Mary Simons, coordinator of the Moneigh® project. “Giacomo was the most shy, Super Saver has the most zen, and Shackleford the most playful”, “Each painting is unique and original”, says Simons.
