Ohio Derby winner Mr. Z, a 5-year-old son of Malibu Moon who has compiled over $1 million in earnings while winning two of 25 starts, has been vanned from the Oaklawn Park barn of trainer D. Wayne Lukas to owner Brad Kelley's Calumet Farm in Lexington.
Mr. Z began his career racing in the colors of Zayat Stable and first appeared in Kelley's Calumet Farm silks in the 2015 Preakness Stakes, where he finished fifth behind Zayat's Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. Mr. Z has placed in eight graded stakes races, including the G1 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity, G1 Los Alamitos Futurity, G1 Arkansas Derby, G2 Indiana Derby, and G2 Saratoga Special. His most recent start came when finishing sixth in a Feb. 6 allowance/optional claiming race at Oaklawn.
Correction: The original version of this article incorrectly stated a decision has been made to retire Mr. Z.
