Reigning Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Oatsee will soon be heading to England and a date with Frankel after producing a healthy Bernardini filly on Wednesday.

Darby Dan Farm, where the mare and foal are boarded, sent a tweet saying that both mare and foal were doing well.

Oatsee, a 16-year-old daughter of Unbridled, was named the 2012 KY Broodmare of the Year after producing such offspring as Grade 1 winners Shackleford and Lady Joanne, in addition to Afleeting Lady, winner of the G2 Falls City Handicap last year.

I am new to this mares traveling abroad for breeding…do the foals go as well?

    • desertrailrat

No the foals are left with nurse mares.

And what happens to the nurse mare foal?

    • PNkt

In my experience (in Europe) the foal usually travels with the mare, though I’ve little experience of travelling mares and foals internationally. To be honest it would have been far better to travel the mare to Britain to foal down rather than have the issue of travelling a young foal.

With regards to the nurse mare foals, they are usually hand raised and if they are fillies, added to the nurse mare band or if they are colts sold on as riding horses.
