Helsinge, with her 2012 filly, a full sister to Black Caviar

Helsinge, the dam of superstar mare, Black Caviar, died last week at Gilgai Farm in Australia. She was 15.

According to a report at Racing.com, the daughter of Desert Sun died after “having a reaction to medication”. Helsinge was in foal to Written Tycoon.

Gilgai Farm's Rick Jamieson purchased Helsinge at a mixed broodmare sale in 2005. Although she was unraced, she sported a rich pedigree, and was a half-sister to Group 1 winner Magnus.

Helsinge's first foal was champion Black Caviar. The following year she produced a full brother to Black Caviar named Moshe, who won three of five starts before being retired to stud. In 2009 she produced All Too Hard, a half brother to Black Caviar that went on to win four G1 races and is now a successful sire.

Helsinge had not produced a foal since 2013.

Helsinge had been having difficulty in falling pregnant and carrying a foal to full term in recent years. So why did they force her to continue to breed when obviously her health was poor and she was at great risk and requiring ‘certain’ treatment when in foal? No words.

Same story for Royal Delta, another tragic loss. I’m so glad that Barbara Banke has spared Rachel Alexandra the same fate.
