Schiaparelli wins the Royal Heroine

Five-year-old, Grade 2-winning mare Schiaparelli has been retired and will ship to Kentucky to begin her career as a broodmare, according to a report by Daily Racing Form.

Owners Jan Vandebos and Robert Naify said a recent post-race bone scan revealed some weaknesses that could prove risky later in a race career. The winner of the Grade 2 Royal Heroine Mile Stakes earlier this month, and also finished second in the Grade 3 Las Cienegas Stakes earlier this year. She was campaigned by Mike Puype for owner RanJan Racing. She retires with $274,184 in earnings.

Thank you all for taking such lovely care of her. I watched her win earlier this month and thought her a beautiful, talented horse. Prayers for a successful, happy career as a broodmom :-), and I look forward to seeing her foals.

If every horse that showed potential problems in a scan was retired, racing would collapse.

Well, the nature of the “problems” was not discussed, so why not just trust their judgment?

There are few, if any, owners in this business who care as much about their horses as Jan Vandebos and Robert Naify. They always do what’s best for the horse and never take unnecessary chances. This sport would benefit from having more owners like them. I have no doubt they did the right thing by retiring Schiaparelli. If you knew more about them you wouldn’t make such a callous and uninformed statement.
