Somali Lemonade wins the Grade 1 TVG Diana Stakes at Saratoga on July 19, 2014.

Somali Lemonade died Jan. 23 in the process of birthing her first foal. The foal, by Frankel, was also lost, according to bloodhorse.com.

The 7-year-old daughter of Lemon Drop Kid was residing at Lofts Hall Stud in Sussex, England, at the time of her death. Helen Alexander reported that her sister Caroline Forgason, who owns the mare, is “devastated” by the loss.

Over the course of her 24-race career, Somali Lemonade won six races, including the Grade 1 Diana Stakes at Saratoga in 2014. She finished her career with just under $1 million in earnings for trainer Michael Matz.

Bred in Kentucky by Cina Forgason, the mare was out of a daughter of Nureyev.
