Owners of California-bred foals of 2010 have until Feb. 15 to enroll in the new Golden State Series, a lucrative program of stakes and purse enhancements funded by the Thoroughbred Owners of California, the California Marketing Committee and nomination fees, according to bloodhorse.com.
The series is designed to boost purses and number of races available for 2- and 3-year-olds, with a longer-range goal of expanding purses and opportunities for older horses as well. Purses for the stakes series will range from $100,000 to $300,000.
The program, along with a companion Cal-Bred Maiden Bonus Program implemented two years ago, is credited with fueling higher yearling sales prices at auction and attracting promising stallions to California.
