Beholder, a 9-year-old Henny Hughes mare, carried the Spendthrift Farm colors to Eclipse Award titles as champion 2-year-old filly, 3-year-old filly, and two reigns as champion older female. She earned more than $6.1 million on the racetrack, highlighted by two victories in the Breeders' Cup Distaff, a win in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, three consecutive scores in the Grade 1 Zenyatta Stakes, and a win against males in the G1 Pacific Classic.
Though her first foal is just a yearling, Beholder will have a hot pace to catch amongst her family in terms of reproducing runners. She is out of 2016 Broodmare of the Year Leslie's Lady, whose other runners of note include Grade 1 winner Into Mischief, a cornerstone of Spendthrift's stallion roster, and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Mendelssohn, who begins his stallion career this season at Ashford Stud.
War Front stands at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Ky., for an advertised fee of $250,000. Beholder is part of War Front's 13th book of mares since retiring to stud.
A 17-year-old son of Danzig, War Front retired with victories in the G2 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Breeders' Cup Handicap and the non-graded Princelet Stakes. He has become an international sire of influence, with 43 worldwide graded or group stakes winners led by European champions Declaration of War, U S Navy Flag, Air Force Blue, Brave Anna, and Due Diligence.
Domestically, War Front's top runners include Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Hit It a Bomb, and G1 winners The Factor, Avenge, Jack Milton, Data Link, and American Patriot, among others. He is represented on this year's Kentucky Derby trail by War of Will, winner of the G2 Risen Star Stakes and G3 LeComte Stakes at the Fair Grounds.
