The Courier-Journal's DerbyHQ Top 20 poll is a collaboration of the top 20 Kentucky Derby selections of 15 high-profile members of the racing media, including the Paulick Report's own Scott Jagow. Nyquist's dominating victory over the Grade 1 Florida Derby maintained his position atop this week's poll with 13 of the 15 number one votes, and voters ranked California-based horses in three of the top five spots.

“At this point, Nyquist still appears to stand alone,” said Scott Jagow. “Appearances days before the Derby will be particularly important this year.”

“While I now consider Creator a legitimate Kentucky Derby contender, along with Blue Grass Stakes winner Brody's Cause, I think the three horses with the best chance to win the roses this year are all based in California,” said Jon White, Santa Anita Park's odds maker, who had the opportunity to watch Nyquist, Exaggerator and Mor Spirit race in person.

Exaggerator jumped up to second this week after his Santa Anita Derby romp, and Gun Runner is just behind him after winning both Louisiana preps. Mor Spirit hangs on to a number one vote despite his defeat in the Santa Anita Derby, placing fourth overall, and Mohaymen retains the fifth spot despite a poor showing in the Florida Derby. This Saturday's Arkansas Derby winner Creator moved from unranked to eighth overall, while beaten favorite Cupid dropped to 19th.
