Turfway Jockeys Decide Not To Ride After Saturday’s First Two Races

Turfway Park canceled races three through eight on Saturday's card after the jockey colony elected not to ride, citing cold weather.

“The temperature at the time of cancellation was well above the agreed-upon threshold and the wind was negligible. Given those facts, we fully expected to run tonight and were surprised the jockeys chose not to finish the card,” said General Manager Daniel ‘Chip' Bach.

Live racing is expected to resume Thursday, Jan. 11.

Yeah it’s a little different setting in that warm office, instead of having frozen balls of polytrack flying back hitting u in the face

What about the horses getting crystalized frost bitten lungs. Not safe for anyone to be out exerting that much energy in temps of 10.

Sounds like jocks have better horse sense than the management.

They should have cancelled in the a.m. Now they want to blame the jocks for forcing a cancellation. Yeah I race at Turfway and I’m losing money , but it has been brutally cold since Christmas eve. I haven’t seen anything like it for years . Your asking alot from your riders morning and night , and asking alot from you horses. Better days are coming

I’m a total wimp with anything under 65 degrees so no argument from this guy. I’d assume the races will be added this week or something?

  • Eric

When they cancelled, the temperature was 12 degrees, and the wind chill was 1 degree. I don’t know what the “agreed upon” threshold is but you are asking a lot from the horses, the riders, the gate crew, the pony riders, etc. And there is more kickback at Turfway than any other track I have ever seen – getting pelted in the face with that rubbery stuff can’t feel good in 12 degrees.

The decision to race was about simulcast wagering — the jockeys voting to nix the remainder of the card was about safety.

as i used to groom horses at Latonia back in the days i seem to remember it being colder than 10 !

The jockeys and horses are the one’s out there in the elements for the entertainment of others. They should be respected, especially when decisions are made on the basis of safety. We must remember jockeys only make money when they ride, therefore no racing hurts them significantly!
