With all sights set on a prosperous 2019, Santa Anita Park will be the place to be on New Year's Day, Tuesday, as the track will offer fans a 10-race program, highlighted by the Grade III, $100,000 Joe Hernandez Stakes, along with a Single Ticket 20 cent Rainbow Pick Six Jackpot carryover of $323,044. Special early first post time on Tuesday is at 12 noon.
With the popular Rainbow Six attracting $249,974 in “new” money today, there was a total Rainbow Six pool of $515,794, which helped to create a sizeable payoff of $48,909 on three winning tickets.
The Joe Hernandez, which pays tribute to the original voice of Santa Anita, who called some 15,587 consecutive races from the track's opening on Dec. 25, 1934 up until he collapsed during the running of a race on Jan. 27, 1972, is for older horses at 6 ½ furlongs down the hillside turf course and has been carded as the eighth race.
Approximate post time for Tuesday's fifth race, the first leg in the Rainbow Six, is at 2:04 p.m. PT.
With 54 horses eligible to run in the New Year's Day Rainbow Six, average field size stands at nine runners per race.
Santa Anita has also announced it will present a nine-race program on Friday, Jan. 4, with first post time at 12:30 p.m. (The track will be dark for live racing on Wednesday and Thursday).
