Ruidoso Downs Race Track will add $1,000 to the fifth race trifecta pool every Saturday during the upcoming horse racing season that begins on May 25. The fifth race post time is usually 2:40 pm MTD (4:40 EST).
“Adding $1,000 to the pool is likely to increase the payout by 20-30 percent over the average from last year,” said Ruidoso Downs president and general manager Jeff True. “It doesn't cost the patron any additional money to get the higher payout, so we think that this promotion will spur additional handle.”
“Adding money to a mutuel pool in this way is a fairly new concept in the U.S.,” said True. “It's different than a ‘guaranteed pool' and is done in lieu of reducing the takeout. We will be watch how our fans react and see if it's something that we can expand upon in the future.”
Ruidoso will offer two, daily 50-cent “Pick-4” wagers in the first four and final four races on the cards. Additionally, two 50-cent “Pick-3” wagers start in the second and fifth races. Ten-cent “Superfecta” wagering will be offered throughout the card, entries permitting, along with one-dollar exactas trifectas on every race.
Standard post time for the summer meeting will be 1:00 pm MTD (3 pm EST.) However, certain trial race days, including opening day May 25, may be as early as noon MTD given the number of entrants exceeds 250. See www.raceruidoso.com for details.
