Princeofthenorth Triggers $784,553 Payoff In Santa Anita’s Single Ticket Rainbow Pick Six Jackpot

In the most unlikely of longshot scenarios, the Hector Palma-trained Princeofthenorth broke slowly and was next to last with Eswan Flores up in a field of 11 maidens after the first quarter mile, but rallied five-wide turning for home en route to a three quarter length victory going 6 ½ furlongs in Friday's eight and final race, thereby triggering a massive $784,553.70 20 cent Single Ticket Rainbow Pick Six Jackpot payoff at Santa Anita.

Purchased for $4,500 in Brazil, the winning Single Ticket was one of just two such “live” tickets in the eight race, the other being the Mike Harrington-conditioned Zees Empire, who finished eighth at odds of 97-1.

Owned by BG Stables and Hector Palma, Princeofthenorth, a first time starter in for a $30,000 claiming tag, was off at 34-1 and paid $71.00 to win.

“It wasn't me my friend,” said Palma, when asked if he was the holder of the life-changing ticket. “My Pick Six was dead after the fifth race. I didn't think Time N Money (ninth in a field of 11 at odds of 7-2) could lose!”

With $158,860 in new Rainbow Six money bet today, the total Jackpot pool reached $759,411 by third race post time.

Beginning with Friday's third race, winning post positions and odds were as follows: Race 3, (6) 3-1, Race 4, (2) 2-1, Race 5, (12) 3-1, Race 6, (7) 9-1, Race 7, (6) 13-1 and Race 8, (2) 34-1.

With the Grade I, $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational coming in via simulcast from Gulfstream Park, there is a special early first post time of 12 noon for a nine-race card on Saturday at Santa Anita.

Approximate post time for race four, the beginning of the Rainbow Six, is at 1:40 PT.

The Grade II, $200,000 Palos Verdes Stakes, for older horses at six furlongs, has been carded as Saturday's eighth race. Trainer John Sadler's Flagstaff, who will be ridden by Flavien Prat, has been installed as the 2-1 morning line favorite.
