On Saturday, Margaret Reid placed a fortuitous Pick 5 wager at Retama Park in Texas for just $18 on the Kentucky Derby card at Churchill Downs, reports abcnews.com. Several hours later, she watched Justify cross the finish line first in the Run for the Roses, and saw her winnings flash up on the simulcast board: $1.2 million.
“It's extremely rare,” said Retama spokesperson Rachel Bagnetto. “To bet that little amount of money and win $1.2 million is unheard of. In fact, it's the first time it's happened at Retama.”
The $0.50 Pick 5 sequence began with Race 8, the Churchill Downs Stakes won by Limousine Liberal ($10.80). Maraud ($18.80) took the American Turf in Race 9, and Funny Duck ($81.40) won the Pat Day Mile in Race 10. The 11th race was the Old Forester Turf Classic, won by Yoshida ($21.80), and Justify paid $7.80 in the Kentucky Derby.
Reid often attends Retama Park with friends, and did her homework before placing the lucky wager.
“I'll invest some of it, obviously,” Reid told the New York Post. “I have a young daughter that's going to be going to college in three years, so some of it will go there.”
