This Friday's Tancred Stakes day at Rosehill provides a final opportunity to see Australia's top race horses in action ahead of The Championships, the Australian equivalent to the Breeders' Cup, on April 5th and April 12th at Royal Randwick.
The Rosehill program features two Group 1 races – the Tancred Stakes and the Vinery Stud Stakes. As his final lead up to a possible start in the G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes versus Winx on April 12th, the Godolphin stayer Avilius (7/4) will contest the Tancred Stakes over 1 ½ miles, where he will encounter trainer Chris Waller's duo of Brimham Rocks and Patrick Erin.
Jockey Kerrin McEvoy recently rode Avilius to victory in the G1 Ranvet Stakes, however has opted to ride Tancred Stakes second favorite Red Cardinal (5/2) in the Tancred. McEvoy rode Red Cardinal to victory in the recent G3 Sky High Stakes and is looking to use the Tancred Stakes as a springboard to his autumn target, the G1 Sydney Cup over 2 miles, on day two of The Championships.
Looking for his second Tancred win, Waller's best chance rests with 7-year-old Patrick Erin, coming out of gate six. Big Duke (5/1), Rondinella (10/1) and Yogi (10/1), are also included in the list of contenders for Friday night.
Waller has another headliner this weekend in the G1 Vinery Stud Stakes over 1 ¼ miles. His brilliant three-year-old filly Verry Elleegant, along with Mark Newnham's breakout star Nakeeta Jane, will use the race as a tune up for the G1 Australian Oaks. Set for day two of The Championships on Friday, April 12th, the 1 ½ mile Oaks is regarded as the premier staying test for Australia's three-year-old fillies.
The wide-open Vinery will offer punters great value across the board. Verry Elleegant (5/2) currently looks like the one to beat after proving that she can handle longer distances, striking gold on the heavy track at Rosehill in the G2 Phar Lap Stakes. Nakeeta Jane (5/1), winner of the G1 Surround Stakes and G2 Light Fingers Stakes, will give chase, while Group 3 Kembla Grange Classic winner Pohutukawa (4/1) is also expected to be in the picture.
Post time of the first race is scheduled at 12:30 p.m. (9:30 p.m. EDT or 6:30 p.m. PDT Friday, March 29th) with the G1 Tancred Stakes run at 4:30 p.m. Sydney time (1:30 a.m. EDT or 10:30 p.m. PDT).
The support card features a talented lineup as the top mares, including Alizee (2/1), Dyslexic (7/1) and Daysee Doom (11/1), will show their class in the G2 Emancipation Stakes. Madison County enters the G2 Tulloch Stakes as a 7/4 favorite, while competitors in the G3 Doncaster Prelude will look to earn a starting spot and ballot exemption for the Doncaster Mile at The Championships next Friday. Sharing the role of favorite in the Prelude are Seaway and Mask of Time, each at 4/1.
