Monday, March 23, 2020 was a monumental day in the history of Fonner Park for parimutuel handle. Unfortunately, that was not the case for purse contribution or for recouping expenses to conduct racing.
“With today's all-time record mutuel handle of $1,340,047, we have funded only four future races, plus we did not even cover our expenses for our weekly racing operations payroll. It's a sobering thought but I'm not surprised.” said Chris Kotulak, Fonner Park CEO.
“The sad truth is that the horsemen and Fonner Park retain only a tiny sliver of the overall money bet off-track on our races. This Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday racing schedule is a two-week trail. The final numbers will determine our future for our 2020 racing season,” Kotulak said. “I commend the horsemen and local race fans for enduring this nontraditional no-spectator manner of conducting racing, plus my staff and track security have done an outstanding job.”
