Australia's top two-year-old horses meet at Rosehill Gardens this Friday night for Longines Golden Slipper Day and the AU$3.5 million G1 Golden Slipper Stakes, the world's richest race for the age group. The G1 George Ryder Stakes will compete for the spotlight as Winx pursues victory in her second-to-last race, while her final race could put her against rising super star The Autumn Sun who races in the G1 Rosehill Guineas.
Already a fan favorite, The Autumn Sun will look to repeat his remarkable Randwick Guineas victory in the G1 Rosehill Guineas and encourage connections to take on Winx in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at The Championships on Friday, April 12th. Redzel, Australia's best sprinter and two-time winner of Australia's richest race, The Everest, will take part in The Galaxy. With all the Australian turf stars on show, this shapes up as the most thrilling event on the international racing schedule this weekend.
Australian horse racing fans can take in all the action and excitement from Golden Slipper Day 2019 beginning at 12:30 p.m. Sydney time, with the AU$3.5 million (US$2.4 million) Golden Slipper Stakes taking center stage at 4.30 p.m. (1:30 a.m. EST or 10:30 p.m. PST on Friday, March 22nd).
Cosmic Force, trained by dual Golden Slipper-winning trainer Peter Snowden, opened as an early market outsider for Friday's showpiece event but the lines quickly flipped when he pulled off a stunning upset win in the G3 Pago Pago Stakes at Rosehill last week. Ridden by James Macdonald, the son of Deep Field surged ahead of the competition to win by over seven lengths and secure a berth in the Slipper. This was preceded by an impressive second to Microphone in the G2 Skyline Stakes.
“There hasn't been a performance like that seven days out from the Slipper. It was two-fold: one the ease of victory; the other was it was done on a wet track, which encourages punters more because that is what he's going to get in the Slipper,” TAB's Glenn Munsie said.
Cosmic Force scored another victory in the barrier draws, landing barrier two in the capacity field and firming to the 4/1 favorite. Ridden by Mark Zahra, he will continue his newfound rivalry with Microphone who is in barrier one and the 5/1 second-favorite. Microphone will be joining stablemates Tenley (5/1), Lyre (10/1), Exhilarates (16/1), Pin Sec (20/1), Kiamichi (50/1) and first emergency Bivouac (66/1).
With seven starters in the field, including two of the top three, and a stellar season in the rear view, Godolphin stands on the doorstep of a significant milestone: their first Golden Slipper win. The racing powerhouse's runners have been making their mark in the juvenile ranks, counting the G2 Reisling Stakes (Tenley), G3 Black Opal Stakes (Pin Sec), G2 VRC Sires Produce Stakes (La Tene), and the Gold Coast Magic Millions Classic (Exhilarates), among their recent wins.
Early favorite, the Chris Waller-trained Yes Yes Yes, drifted out to 6/1 after drawing gate 19.
Winx – the world's best horse, holder of four Cox Plate titles and an undefeated record of 31 straight wins – is scheduled to write another chapter in the history books when she defends her George Ryder crown for an unprecedented fourth time. Ranked No 1 in the world with 23 Group 1 victories to her name, there is an air of inevitability that Winx will once again be crowned the winner.
The George Ryder also serves as a prelude to Winx's final race, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, which takes place at The Championships on Friday, April 12th at Randwick. The implications of that race are further bolstered, as it may also serve as a passing of the torch to The Autumn Sun, an emerging force that looks poised to assume the mantle of Australia's best horse.
The Golden Slipper Carnival is available to live-stream in HD on skyracingworld.com and major ADW platforms such as TVG, TwinSpires, Xpressbet, NYRABets, WatchandWager, HPIbet, AmWager, and BetAmerica. Wagering is also available via these ADW platforms. Fans can get free access to live-streaming, past performances and expert picks on all races at skyracingworld.com.
